If ChatGPT cannot open your webpage, check for a wrong address or login requirement, security blocking the visit, or page text missing from what the visitor receives. If web search itself is unavailable, check your ChatGPT account settings and usage limits before changing your website.
Your website may still open normally on your laptop. The steps below help you separate those situations and give your web team something specific to investigate.
Start with the link that failed. OpenAI explains that it uses different automated visitors for different tasks, including finding pages for search and opening a page during a conversation. Your web team needs to know which task failed before deciding what to change.
“No webpage found for ChatGPT” describes what you are trying to solve here. We have not verified it as an official error message with a single cause.
Save the full link and the actual message before changing anything.
Try the page in a private browser window to check for a login requirement.
Ask your web team to check the failed visit and whether the main page text was delivered.
If ChatGPT reads the page but does not recommend your business, use our website visibility guide for that separate problem.
Why ChatGPT says it cannot open your webpage
Start by matching your experience to the situations below. This will help you explain the problem to the person who manages your website.
What happened
Where to start
A link from a ChatGPT answer opens a missing page
Open the same link in a private window and see where it takes you
ChatGPT cannot open a link you supplied
Ask your web team whether the page is public and whether security settings blocked the visit
ChatGPT says web search is unavailable
Check the conversation’s tools and account settings
ChatGPT reads your page but omits your business from a recommendation
Check how clearly the page explains your offer and whether it fits the question
For a missing Search tool, OpenAI’s Search troubleshooting guidance recommends checking a new conversation and the intended account or workspace. Usage limits and managed-workspace settings can also affect availability. Changing your website will not resolve an account-level restriction.
What to check when ChatGPT cannot open your page
1. Test the exact address without your saved login
Copy the full website address from the failed attempt. Use that page, rather than just your homepage. Open it in a private browser window while signed out of your website.
Check whether you reach the intended public page. Your normal browser may have an active login that makes a restricted page look publicly accessible.
Look for an outdated link, especially if your website was recently rebuilt. Your homepage might work while an old product address leads nowhere. If the page moved, ask your web team to make sure the old link takes visitors to its replacement.
2. Ask your web team what happened to the visit
An attempt to open a page usually gets a response from the website. Your web team can check it to see whether the page was missing or access was refused. Sometimes the connection fails before a response arrives, for example because the connection times out or a secure connection cannot be established.
The address sends visitors somewhere else; check whether that is the correct page or a sign-in screen
401 Unauthorized
The request needs valid sign-in details
404 Not Found
The page could not be found at that address
403 Forbidden
The website refused access
429 Too Many Requests
The website is limiting repeated visits
A code starting with 5
Something went wrong on the website’s server
200 OK
The website sent a response successfully; your team still needs to check that it contained the actual page
Include the time of your failed attempt when you contact them. That makes it easier to find the visit in the website’s activity records, usually called logs.
3. Ask which OpenAI visitor was involved
The names can look technical, but the distinction is simple. OAI-SearchBot helps find pages for ChatGPT search. GPTBot collects material that may be used for model training. ChatGPT-User is used for certain visits triggered by a person’s request.
A website can give these visitors different permissions. Blocking the training visitor does not automatically explain why ChatGPT failed to open a link.
Your website may use a security service to block unwanted automated traffic. Ask your team whether it also stopped the visit you were expecting.
For ChatGPT search, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, the file that sets crawler permissions. It also recommends allowing traffic from its published search crawler IP ranges, which your team can use to check the visitor’s network address.
A direct page-opening request needs separate attention. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User visits because a person initiated them. Security settings can still block a visit, so ask your team to inspect what actually happened.
5. Check whether the visitor received the words on your page
Sometimes a page opens, but its main text is missing from the version an automated visitor receives. Your web team can compare that version with what you see in your browser.
Google’s guidance on JavaScript websites explains that some sites load their content after the first page response, and some automated visitors cannot run the software needed to display it. That guidance describes Google Search, whose crawler can run JavaScript. It does not establish how a particular ChatGPT visit handles your page. Ask your team to test the text delivered during the affected visit.
You can ask a straightforward question: “When this visitor opens our service page, does it receive the service description, or just the surrounding page layout?”
Can AI services reach your important pages?
The free Express Check identifies website access and readability gaps so you can investigate the right problem.
Imagine a Texas bookkeeping firm sharing its small-business service page with ChatGPT. The owner can open it, but an automated visit fails.
Opening the link in a private browser window reveals a sign-in screen. The owner could see the page because they were already logged in.
The useful fix is to put the service information on a page anyone can open without signing in. Private client records should remain protected.
This is an illustrative scenario. It shows how an ordinary access restriction can look like an AI-specific problem. A new paragraph about bookkeeping would leave the login requirement exactly where it was.
How to retest a link ChatGPT was unable to open
Paste the same link into ChatGPT and repeat your original request. Check whether it can now use the information on the page. Ask your web team to confirm that the visit reached the intended content too.
For search permission changes, OpenAI says its systems may take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update. This is not a promise of a visit or a citation within that time.
If the page is now readable, assess broader visibility separately. Our ChatGPT visibility checklist provides a way to organise that next step.
GEO Fix checks whether your website has access or content problems that can make it harder for AI services to use. Paid plans provide files and instructions to help your team make changes. ChatGPT controls its own tools and recommendations, so fixing the website cannot guarantee that your business will be mentioned.
What to send your web team

FAQ
Check whether Search is available in a new conversation and whether you are using the intended account or workspace. Usage limits or an administrator’s settings may affect access. If Search works for other pages but fails on one link, investigate that page separately.
We have not verified that wording as an official OpenAI error code. Save the message you actually saw and the link you used. The wording alone is not enough to identify what went wrong.
You may already be signed in, while ChatGPT is trying to open a public page. Website security may also treat automated visits differently. Try a private browser window, then ask your web team to check the failed visit.
GPTBot is used for training, with permissions separate from search. For direct ChatGPT-User visits, OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply because a person initiated the action. Ask your team which visitor failed.
The llms.txt community proposal describes a file for helping AI tools use website information. We have not verified that ChatGPT consults it when opening a page. Adding it will not restore a deleted page or remove a sign-in screen. Fix the access problem first.
No. GEO Fix can identify website problems and provide instructions through paid plans. ChatGPT also decides which pages to open and which businesses to mention.
Keep the full link and a screenshot of what happened. Try the link in a private browser window, then send your findings to your web team using the request above.
After they fix the problem, repeat the same ChatGPT request. Once the page can be read, you can focus on how well it answers your customers’ questions.
