What is AEO?
"AEO" stands for answer engine optimisation. The term describes a growing set of practices, not a single algorithm or platform, aimed at making a website easy for answer engines to find, parse and quote. Answer engines include AI chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, retrieval-based products such as Perplexity and Copilot, and AI-generated summary boxes inside traditional search results such as Google AI Overviews.
Unlike a traditional results page, an answer engine typically shows one synthesised answer with a handful of cited sources, or sometimes no visible link at all. All three depend on the same foundation: a page has to be crawlable, return a real HTTP 200, and say something specific enough to be useful. How answer engines pick sources
Answer engines generally run a retrieval step before generating a response: they search an index or the live web for candidate pages, then rank and select a small set to ground the answer in. A page has to survive three stages to be selected — it must be crawlable, it must contain an extractable, factual answer to the underlying question, and it must look trustworthy enough, with consistent claims and clear structure, for the system to rely on it.
Crawl access is the first filter and the most common failure point.
