On the same buyer question, Perplexity never cites about 89% of the websites ChatGPT uses as sources. That is not a quirky week of data — it is how AI answer engines behave when you put them side by side.

If your plan for chatgpt perplexity citations is “rank once, show up everywhere,” you are optimizing for a world that does not exist.

One blended “AI visibility” score hides the real story

Teams love a single number: “AI visibility is up 2 points this week.” That number can still be useful as a direction check. It cannot tell you which assistant moved — or what to fix next.

Wellows analysed 22.7 million citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode between January and June 2026. On questions where all five engines cited something:

  • 79.6% of cited sources appeared on only one of the five engines
  • Only 0.31% of sources showed up on all five
  • Of every website ChatGPT cited, Perplexity never touched 89.1% on that same question

So “we’re visible in AI” often means “we’re visible in one AI.” Your competitor can own Perplexity while you own ChatGPT — and a blended dashboard will average that into a polite shrug.

The same study compared brand mentions with exact page citations. In raw percentages, engines name the same brand (about 30%) far more often than they share the same URL (about 7%). That gap is real as a rate — brand is the easier multi-engine target. But measured against a random baseline the story flips: shared page citations sit about 42× above chance, while shared brand mentions sit about 17×. Page agreement is rarer and more informative; brand agreement is common partly because far fewer brands compete in an answer than pages do. Track both, and don’t treat a brand mention as proof two engines agree on your content.

Why the engines pick different sources

Think of each assistant as a different researcher with a different habit — not as clones of Google’s top ten.

EngineWhat it often leans onWhat that means for you
ChatGPTA mix of known brand signals, established publishers, and live web retrieval when it searchesGetting cited here is its own job — success elsewhere does not transfer cleanly
PerplexityFresh web retrieval, specialist sources, and a lot of community discussion in some categoriesRecency and what people actually say matter more than a polished homepage alone
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeGoogle’s own search index and ranking systemsStrong classic SEO helps this surface more than it guarantees ChatGPT or Perplexity
GeminiIts own retrieval mix — often closer to Google’s world than to ChatGPT’sDo not treat a Gemini win as proof ChatGPT will follow

The pairing data puts ChatGPT at the bottom of cross-engine agreement: rivals miss most of what it cites on the same question. In raw numbers, Google’s two search AI surfaces agree more than any cross-company pair — about 24.5% versus 7.3% website overlap. But the follow-up test shows most of that gap is a shared candidate pool rather than special Google magic: the 3.4× raw advantage shrinks to roughly 1.06× above chance. The practical takeaway holds either way — “we got into an AI Overview” is a Google-surface win, not proof ChatGPT or Perplexity will follow.

Google’s own guidance on generative AI features says optimizing for those features is still SEO for Google Search. That is honest and useful — and incomplete if your buyers also ask ChatGPT or Perplexity before they ever reach google.com.

What this looks like for a real business

These are common patterns we see in scans — illustrative, not named case studies.

On the second pattern, why ChatGPT recommends competitors is usually an authority problem, not a missing keyword. On the third, the crawlers that power live answers are often blocked by accident and differ from training bots like GPTBot.

If you only check whether your website shows up in ChatGPT, you are measuring one researcher. Buyers use more than one.

A practical multi-engine plan (without five agencies)

You do not need five agencies. You need a repeatable habit and a clear order of work.

1. Fix reach before you chase citations

If AI crawlers cannot read your site, citation tactics are theatre. Allow trusted AI search readers in your bot instructions, keep important pages fetchable, and add a short llms.txt-style “about us” file where it helps. Run a free readiness scan before you rewrite half the blog.

2. Test the same buyer prompts on three surfaces

Reuse the prompts from sales calls — not marketing brainstorms. Run each one on ChatGPT, on Perplexity, and on Google where an AI Overview or AI Mode answer appears.

Score two layers separately: brand named versus page linked. Keep engines in separate columns. One blended score erases the lesson, and mixing brand mentions with URL citations hides whether you earned the rarer, stronger signal.

3. Build for brand recall and extractable pages

Brand mentions are the easier path to showing up on more than one engine; exact-page citations are rarer and more meaningful when they happen. So strengthen category clarity wherever your name appears — homepage, directories, reviews — and publish pages AI can quote: clear claims, dated facts, FAQs in buyer language. Vague “we’re the leading…” copy loses to a competitor’s specific, citable paragraph.

4. Match tactics to the surface — lightly

If you are weak on…Lean harder on…
ChatGPTClear entity signals, authoritative third-party mentions, pages that state category and audience in plain text
PerplexityFresh, specific pages; credible community and specialist coverage; answers that stay current
Google AI featuresStrong classic SEO plus helpful, non-commodity content Google already trusts

Do not invent a separate content calendar for every engine, and do not pretend one blog post optimizes for AI globally. Use the scorecard to decide which gap is costing you deals.

5. Re-test monthly on money queries

Citation pools shift. A monthly pass on five commercial prompts across three engines beats a quarterly panic when a competitor shows up in a demo.

Monitoring vs readiness — what to buy first

Once owners see the overlap gap, the next question is usually which GEO tool to buy. How GEO tools differ from SEO platforms is the longer map; the short version is that the software falls into two different jobs.

Tool typeWhat it focuses onExamples
Citation / brand monitoringWhether AI names or links you versus competitors, ideally per engineProfound, Otterly, Peec AI, Scrunch AI, AthenaHQ
Readiness + implementationWhether AI can reach your site, plus the files and CMS steps that fix gapsGEO Fix

Monitoring answers “are we being cited — and on which engine?” That matters once you are readable. Prefer tools that split brand mention from page citation and report engines separately; a single blended AI-visibility number is exactly what the overlap data warns against.

GEO Fix answers the other job: can AI read us, and how do we fix the blockers? It ships robots instructions, an llms.txt-style file, schema, and copy-paste steps for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, or Webflow — not only a score. One-time packages, Starter $199 and Pro $399, rather than a subscription dashboard.

If crawlers are blocked, a citation monitor will mostly report silence. Fix reach first, then measure engines separately.

FAQ

Often no. On matched questions in the 2026 overlap study, Perplexity never touched about 89% of the websites ChatGPT cited for that same question. Treat each engine as a separate visibility surface.

Not automatically. Google’s AI features pull from Google’s search systems, while ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own retrieval. Strong SEO helps Google’s AI surfaces more than it guarantees assistant recommendations elsewhere. See also GEO vs SEO.

Optimize the shared foundations once: crawler access, clear category facts, quotable pages, honest brand mentions. Then put extra effort into the engine where buyer research actually happens in your category — and where your scorecard shows the biggest gap.

A headline score is fine for a weekly glance, not for decisions. Split ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI features, otherwise a win on one engine masks a loss on another. Split brand named from page linked too — raw brand overlap looks friendlier than it is.

They overlap more than ChatGPT and Perplexity do in raw source lists, mostly because they draw from similar candidate pools. After adjusting for that, almost no ownership premium remains. Treat a Google AI citation as progress on Google’s surfaces — not as coverage of OpenAI or Perplexity.

No honest tool can guarantee citations. GEO Fix removes technical blockers so assistants can read and understand your site. Whether you get named still depends on content quality, competition, and each platform’s own choices.

What to do next

Key takeaways:

  • ChatGPT and Perplexity citations barely overlap — winning one engine is not winning “AI.”
  • Track engines and layers separately (brand named vs page linked); raw brand overlap is common, shared pages are rarer and more informative.
  • Fix crawler access first, then test the same buyer prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google.
